I just got this in the mail a couple days ago via pre-order, and now that's I've cracked into it I'm super pumped. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You really pool a lot of different ideas together and communicate them clearly, especially the idea of using simple shapes of tone to communicate more effectively (rather than dealing with detail). This book brings together a lot of the ideas of other teachers I've studied and I owe you deep gratitude for compiling this and sharing this with the world. I'm looking forward to working with what you've shared. :)
The title for this book is misleading; this book is less of a "how to draw" and more of the process that the artist draws within portraits in charcoal. The book is very focused on the artist's specific style and is not really helpful if you are trying to find a book on how to draw portraits step-by-step or techniques. But the artist himself clarifies that this book isn't a how to on technique but rather on principle -- I still don't know what that means and he doesn't elaborate on what he means by teaching principle vs technique -- never the less, I'm going to keep this book for reference as his style is captivating and admirable.
Nathan Fowkes is one of those artists you just can’t easily classify. Amazingly talented and skilled in every medium especially digital he has produced probably the best book available on charcoal portraiture. Starting with supplies and moving on to step by step techniques and then inspiring examples he give enough support for those with basic skills but I think experienced artists looking to improve will find a lot here. Very down to earth writer and sympathetic to the beginner he points out beginner mistakes to avoid and is even humble enough to include some of his own. I only wish I was talented enough to make some of his beginner mistakes! This is a great value if you really want to move up in your use of charcoal. Get this book and practice every day.
I was hoping this book would be more helpful and with newer methods than previously-purchased books on drawing. It succeeded well in that area! The author/teacher's way of explaining how to draw made me feel that Icouldn't wait to get started. I'm delighted with a book that prompts motivation in a subtle and effective way.
I'd give this book 10 stars if I could. While it may not lead you by the hand step by step in terms of instruction, if you really sit down and read what Nathan writes while studying his work, you'll find the book is full of useful advice and information that will improve not just your portrait work but all of your drawing. The author's videos on YouTube are highly recommended as well.
