Pressestimmen
“This book is enlightening, inspiring, igniting, and f*cking SCARY. I loved every word on every page with a ferocity that frightened me.”—Madeline Brewer, actress, The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange Is the New Black, and Cam “I cannot remember reading a collection of poems in one sitting before, but I dove through Gatwood’s in one evening—and then came up for air and dove again.”—Lauren Berry, author of The Lifting Dress “Gatwood’s poems invite a contemporary understanding of sexuality and the feminine form, feminism and inclusion, intersection and advocacy. Her metaphors and images are both breath and being. This book is an offering to the silenced, for firepower and reflection. A haystack of hallelujahs resides in these pages.”—Mahogany L. Browne, author of Black Girl Magic “I love Olivia Gatwood’s voice, her spirit, her genius way of turning and turning and turning a poem until it shines. These poems are a light. I’d follow this book anywhere. I’d trust it with my life.”—Carrie Fountain, author of Burn Lake

I had mixed feelings about this book after reading about 50 pages. But I really understood the message that the author wanted to relay. Without giving away too much of the book, the author details the all too common occurrences of missing, murdered, and abused girls and women and how they recieve little, no, or negative attention from the world. After I fully understood the author's point of view, I found it to be a thought provoking read. It took me a day and a half to finish, its 147 pages with short poems and a consecutive ongoing story.***BUT, if you have suffered mental, physical or sexual abuse, been abducted, kidnapped, or a had family member/friend suffer at the hands of a domestic partner, this book might retraumatize you and I would not recommend it for you. It can be very graphic and explicit (in poetic fashion) and it is meant for a mature adult audience.***
This was one of the best books of poetry I have ever read. It was a brilliant exploration of society's fascination with murder and the stories of victims, as well as being part memoir. These poems mirrored, validated, explored, and transformed so much anxiety and fear I have felt -- as a tomboy kid, a teenage girl, and as a genderqueer adult working through persistent internalized femmephobia. The book gains more and more focus, revving its engines all 147 pages so the girl-notquitegirl-femmeperson in the dark knows there's a gang in the dark not to save her but to witness her saving herself. It is apparent these poems were crafted with much love for anyone who has been or will be feminine or womxn or girl or femme or soft or betrayed.Detailing her most intimate experiences growing up as a woman, dealing with misogyny, sexuality, self-acceptance, and the all too real fear of being murdered, It's hard not to relate, and be inspired by Olivia's candid honesty. This collection of poetry was one that really makes the reader think about things. It is filled with raw emotions about very serious situations that occur every day. She wrote the truths that so many people just want to turn a blind eye to. I felt that this collection made the reader see many different things that occur and how violence against women happens.
The only thing I'd say that could negatively impact the reader is if they are easily triggered or have a traumatic childhood or growing up experience this may not be the book for them. It's extremely graphic in certain spots and while appreciate it for not being a "picture perfect teen" experience it's a little intense in some spots.
When you read Olivia's work, you can tell she is a spoken word artist. Her poems have a rhythm to them that makes you want to read them aloud, shout some of them and whisper others. I loved the expertly woven in verses about the babysitter, how those pieces linked the entire collection together as a narrative without ever sacrificing the piece by piece power of the volume. I had intended this book to last my entire month in Spain, but instead I flew through it in just a week or so. I will have to reread it at a slower pace to savor it.
Powerful to the point of being hard to read, sometimes. I loved these. And maybe the point of it is to make it hard to read. Really worth the effort of reading, even if it ends up not being your jam.
